Rewe Group Introduces Avocado Coating To Extend Shelf Life
Rewe Group has announced it is testing a new fructose-based coating on its avocados, which it says can increase the shelf life of said products by eight days.
The group is already testing the avocados in 360 Penny stores in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate, and from tomorrow (29 January), it will commence selling them in several hundred Rewe outlets.
Rewe said that it is making the move as part of its sustainability strategy to halve the amount of food waste in its supply chain by 2030.
"We see coating as an innovative process to significantly extend the shelf life of selected fruits such as avocados, limes, other citrus fruits and pome fruits," commented Eugenio Guidoccio, managing director of Rewe's ultra-fresh division.
"This is advantageous for both us as a retailer and for our customers, because fewer avocados are thrown away. We very much hope that our customers will support us in our fight against food waste."
Rewe Group added that the testing process for the new avocados will run 'indefinitely'.
