Mercadona Opens New Efficient Supermarket In Madrid

Spanish retailer Mercadona has opened a new efficient supermarket in Madrid, which uses 40% less energy than a traditional store.

Over €4.8 million was invested in this store, which features a new design that improves distribution and layout to 'optimise the buying experience' for customers.

Some of the supermarket's features include a freshly-squeezed orange juice machine, meat counter, specialised cosmetics area, and fish market. Fruit and vegetable aisles have been widened, and new lightweight shopping trolleys will be available.

Energy Saving Measures

Multiple measures have been taken to reduce energy consumption in the store. Insulation, double-glazed windows, and efficient LED lighting systems were installed during construction.

The new store also features a fully integrated technology system for staff, with aims to streamline the supply chain process by providing real time information on every section of the store.

Future Plans

In 2017, Mercadona plans to invest €180 million to renovate 126 of its stores across Spain to this new efficient model. It also plans to invest €5 million in developing computer systems, and advance its expansion in Portugal.

The retailer announced an increase in turnover of 3.9% in 2016, reaching €21.6 billion.
