Auchan has announced plans to increase staff salaries at its 33 hypermarkets in Romania, with outlets in counties such as Cluj, Timis and Sibiu affected by a shortage of employable personnel.
The labour market in Romania has undergone a depletion reminiscent of that which it experienced in 2006 and 2007, when a surge of emigration left domestic industry with a shortfall in manpower.
According to Romania-Insider.com, of Auchan Romania’s 10,500 employees, 7,500 are cashiers and commercial workers.
The group has taken steps in terms of upping workers’ salaries to remedy the problem, however.
'Last year we increased the salaries in the company by 25%. An employee starts with a gross salary of RON 1,300 (€292), which gets to RON 1,400 after the trial period. After one year the salary reaches RON 1,500 (€336),' it said.
