Carrefour Spain To Install Solar Panels At 130 Store Locations

Carrefour Spain is stepping up its solar commitments, with the announcement that it is planning to install 330,000 square metres of solar panels at 130 of its stores.

The solar panels will largely be rolled out in Andalusia, Catalonia, Valencia, Extremadura and Madrid, with the rollout plan scheduled to run until June 2024.

To date, some 30 hypermarkets and supermarkets have seen solar panels introduced, with Carrefour aiming to install an average of 1,700 solar panels at each store.

When the project is finished, Carrefour will have installed a total of 200,000 solar panels, with which it will generate 112,000 MWh/year , which is equivalent to the energy needed by 50,000 homes in one year.

Carrefour is teaming up with SolarProfit, a Barcelona company focused on photovoltaic solar energy, on the project.

Carrefour 2026 Strategy

The move forms part of the retailer's Carrefour 2026 commitment to environmental sustainability, and is backed by other efforts such as a move to electric-powered vehicles.

The retailer aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. To accomplish this goal, Carrefour plans to significantly decrease emissions from its operations, strive for 100% renewable electricity usage by 2030, and further reduce energy consumption.

First-Quarter Performance

In April, France-based Carrefour said it was confident in achieving higher profits and cash flow growth this year, even in the face of high inflation.

The company reported an cceleration in sales growth during the first quarter, with revenues reaching €22.071 billion. This reflected a like-for-like growth of 12.3%, surpassing the 10.9% sales growth observed in the fourth quarter of 2022.
