Festive Food Sales For Furry Friends To Double: Tesco

Twice as many furry friends will be given Christmas goodies this year compared to 2015, Tesco has announced.

The retailer predicted that purchases of luxury holiday meals for dogs and cats will double this Christmas.

Tesco pet food buyer Ashley Marks commented: "Judging by the rocketing demand for posh pooch foodie treats like pigs in blankets, three bird roasts and even mince pies the saying ‘it’s a dog’s life’ can finally be laid to rest, at least for Christmas".

"In the past dogs and cats may have been given a few leftovers off the Christmas dinner table if they were lucky but these days many are being treated like family members."

Tesco said its most popular premium Christmas dinner for dogs and cats will be turkey and sage, with or without cranberry.

'Design your own biscuit bone' kits allow doting owners to personalise their pooch's gift with special icing, and advent calendars can help hurry the countdown to the big day.

Both dogs and cats can get (begrudgingly) into the Christmas spirit with pet-sized jumpers, Santa hats with antlers, and Christmas stockings full of treats.

Data from the RSPCA found that almost 80% of dog owners and 68% of cat owners bought their pets a present in October.
