Pancake Tuesday Boosts Waitrose, But Sales Marginally Down

Upmarket UK retailer Waitrose has reported that sales of pre-made pancakes were up 44% at its stores in the week leading up to Pancake Tuesday, which took place yesterday.

Total sales at the retailer were 0.4% down on the same week the previous year, despite shoppers stocking up on pancake essentials - egg sales were up 5%, flour was up 30% and butter was up 7%.

In addition, pancake toppings such as sugar (up 24%), maple syrup (up 17%) and lemons (up 28%) all saw a boost.

In addition, customers were also adopting healthier eating practices. ‘Fruit, vegetables and salads also continue to see healthy sales and last week saw the launch of all year round British salad leaves at Waitrose - a UK supermarket first,’ a Waitrose statement said.
