In addition, snacks saw a rise - packets of nuts were up 17%.

The cold snap also led to sales of soups (+15%) and roasting meats (+52%) seeing gains.

Total sales at the retailer, excluding fuel, were 1.8% higher than the same week last year.

‘Elsewhere, shoppers took the opportunity of our kitchen and home event to freshen up the house with essentials - sales of the range as a whole were up by 15% for the week, a Waitrose statement said.
