SPAR Slovenia plans to launch sustainable cotton bags designed by art students from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design at the University of Ljubljana (UL ALUO).
The retailer has selected four designs that were submitted as part of a competition titled 'SPAR ART: Green Seal Bags', in which 26 students participated.
The chief executive of SPAR Slovenia, David Kovačič, said, "The competition aims to promote sustainable awareness and responsible behaviour in daily life. The enthusiastic response from young artists reflects their awareness of the problem and their love for the planet."
Three of the four designs were chosen jointly by SPAR Slovenia and UL ALUO, while the fourth was selected based on a customer vote on SPAR Slovenia’s website.
The retailer announced the winners at an exhibition in Ljubljana’s Citypark shopping centre, and each winner was presented with a €1,000 voucher.
SPAR Slovenia will also select five customers from among those who participated in the online voting and give them a sustainable 'surprise package', it added.
Founded in 1991, SPAR Slovenia is operated by ASPIAG (Austria SPAR International AG), a subsidiary of SPAR Austria AG.
SPAR Slovenia operates three store formats: SPAR, SPAR supermarkets, and INTERSPAR hypermarkets.
In Austria, SPAR recently rolled out a new customer-facing app, which highlights discounts, promotions and vouchers, offering shoppers an 'improved shopping experience'. The app also enables shoppers to access digital receipts, in order to save paper.
