Spar South Africa Appoints Philipson To Head Up Switzerland Business

Spar South Africa has announced that Rob Philipson has been appointed the new chief executive of its Switzerland operations, effective from the first of June, Planet Retail has reported.

Philipson currently holds the role of managing director of Spar South Africa’s Kwazulu-Natal Division, having first joined the retailer in 1996, from Woolworths. He previously held a number of operational roles within the group.

In March 2016, Spar South Africa announced its purchase of a 60% stake in Spar Switzerland, for 44.5 million Swiss francs, describing it at the time as an ‘opportunity for the company to invest in an established business in a stable market with growth potential’.

It also previously invested in BWG Group, which operates the Spar business in Ireland, taking an 80% stake there in 2014, as it sought to expand its business interests outside of the African continent.
