Sainsbury's Online Service Disrupted By IT Issue

UK retailer Sainsbury's was forced to delay or cancel deliveries from nearly one third of its stores this week due to a computer failure, according to the Financial Times.

The paper reports that there is now a backlog of online grocery orders following an IT issue that occurred on Monday, which may have affected as many as 200 Sainsbury's superstores.

Temporary Issue

The retailer said in a statement, however, that its online service was operating normally again on Tuesday: 'Following a temporary issue, we’re rebooking a small number of customers’ orders. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.'

Last month, ratings agency Moody's published a report predicting that online will account for almost 20% of retail sales in the UK in the next five years. It said that profits will decline for retailers that fail to adapt their business models as increasing numbers of consumers move online.
