Walmart Expands Checkout-Free Service With 'Scan & Go' App

US retailer Walmart is expanding its Scan & Go service, which enables shoppers to pay for their items without checkout lanes or cash registers, according to Business Insider.

Customers can scan products as they shop with their smartphone or a hand-held scanner, then pay for the total amount online, and show their digital receipt to a member of staff on the way out the door.

The retailer first launched Scan & Go at its Sam's Club outlets in autumn 2016, but is now expanding the service to more than a dozen locations in Texas, Florida, South Dakota, Arkansas, Georgia and Kentucky.

Amazon Competition

Online retail giant Amazon unveiled a similar technology last year for its brick-and-mortar grocery store concept Amazon Go.

However, with this new move Walmart takes a step ahead of the e-commerce business, which still only has one prototype store in Seattle, Washington.
