Continente's Nutritional Labelling System Marks 10th Anniversary

Portuguese supermarket chain Continente is marking the 10th anniversary of its colour-based nutritional labeling system.

The nutritional guidelines associate a three-color code - similar to traffic lights - to indicate the percentage of Daily Value of Reference (DVR) for fat, saturated fat, sugar, and salt, in food items.

Decisive Factor

The commercial director of private brands at Continente, Ana Alves, said that the labelling system is a decisive factor for customers when they buy a product.

Alves added that as the group's private-label range, comprising around 4,000 references, expands, the company will add the label to more food items.

Awareness about nutrition is on the rise in the country, and around 71% of Portuguese want to have access to information about the food they consume, the report said.
