Migros To Sell Locally-Sourced Christmas Trees

Swiss retailer Migros Zurich is to sell locally-sourced Christmas trees over Danish imports this year, with a variety of locally-grown firs going on sale at 35 Migros outlets, in and around Zurich (Switzerland), on 15 December.

The trees, which will be sold under the motto ‘From the region. For the region’, will be supplied by local growers Agroservice, which has been sustainably cultivating Nordmann, Red and Blue Firs for the last ten years, at a location near Urdorf.

Fir trees take up to ten years to reach the optimum retail height of 120 centimetres. After three to five years, the trees’ branches are trimmed, to create a balanced shape.

"For me, perfection is an almost creative process," explained Willi Mathys, co-owner of Agroservice. “But to be beautiful, a tree doesn’t need to be perfect."

A Migros spokesperson added, "The shape of the tree is a matter of taste. But functionality also plays a role: in urban Migros outlets, smaller trees are particularly in demand."
