Carrefour First In Romania To Introduce 100% Biodegradable Bags

Carrefour Romania has become the first retailer in the country to introduce 100% biodegradable bags at a national level.

Developed by a local producer and using natural polymers, the new bags will replace millions of non-biodegradable plastic bags used by the retailer in more than 320 stores in Romania by the end of June.

The bag has been developed in partnership with the first Romanian brand of 100% biodegradable packaging, Biodeck.

It is made from corn starch and printed with soy-based ink specially designed to biodegrade quickly, over three to six months, with no impact on the environment.

Moreover, the bag is entirely compostable, converting into organic material due to naturally occurring microorganisms, according to S0708 certification.

Multiple Formats

The 100% biodegradable bags will be available to Carrefour customers in two formats, with capacities of 5kg and 7kg, respectively.

According to Carrefour Romania's corporate affairs director, Anca Damour, the introduction of the biodegradable bag is part of Carrefour Romania’s vision of promoting a "regenerative economy" that favours biodegradable materials, while moving away from products that are toxic for the environment and contribute to additional waste.

This goal can be achieved, Damour added, with the use of innovation and biotechnology, as well as by working with local partners connected to global innovation ecosystems.
