Carrefour To Use Recyclable Packaging For All Own-Brand Goods By 2025

Carrefour has announced that it has become the first French retailer to commit to 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable packaging for its own-brand goods.

The group expects to reach this target by the year 2025.

Circular Economy

Carrefour is rolling out this plan in support of the Circular Economy Roadmap from the Ministry for Environmental and Sustainable Transition. It is also committed to the a National Pact for plastics, which seeks to achieve a 100% circular economy in regards to packaging in France.

The retailer has called for a ‘collective rethink’ of resource use and a reduction of the use of packaging and single-use plastics by systemising recycling.

It also plans to eliminate non-recyclable packaging of organic fruit and vegetables, and to stop selling plastic straws by the end of 2018, gradually replacing plastic straws on juice cartons.

It also aims to replace polystyrene trays used in meat, fish and cheese departments with a more recyclable variant, as well as using 50% recycled plastics for its juice, soda and water bottles.

Carrefour recently announced that it had opened a brand new concept store in Shanghai, called Carrefour Le Marche.
