Prosecco Sales Growing Faster Than Champagne Across Europe, Study Finds

Sales of Prosecco are growing at a faster rate than those of Champagne, right across Europe, a new study has found.

Predictive analytics firm IRI found that Prosecco sales across Europe hit €789 million in 2016, compared to €1.4 billion for Champagne sales. However, Prosecco outperforms its more illustrious cousin in terms of volume sales, with 77 million litres purchased, 25% more than Champagne.

In the year to 30 September, Champagne sales were up 0.9% on the previous year, but down 1.2% in volume. France is the number one market for the sparkling wine, accounting for 66% of all Champagne sales measured in Europe (€921 million).

IRI’s data shows that the sparkling wine market as a whole, which includes Champagne, Prosecco, Cava and other sparkling wines, is now worth almost €4.6 billion in sales value across Europe.
