Russia: X5, Auchan Named Greenest Retail Chains

Russian grocer X5 and French hypermarket chain Auchan have been named the most environmentally conscious supermarkets in Russia by Greenpeace. The results follow projects designed to encourage shoppers to recycle. 

X5 retailers was named No.1 in the third edition of the "Green Supermarket" rankings. X5 retailers include the Perekryostok, Pyatorochka and Karusel chains. No. 2 on the listing was French retailer Auchan. All of the remaining ranked stores had negative totals in the survey. X5 was awarded points for using bags made of recycled paper and bins for collecting recyclable paper at their Volgograd stores. The retailer also have mobile collection points for multilayer packaging. The company was also praised for engaging in dialogue with shoppers about its environmental policies. Meanwhile, Auchan was awarded points for using plastic bags made from 40 per cent recycled material. The French retailer had also installed separated recycling bins at one store.

Following X5 and Auchan, from highest to lowest point total, were Magnit, Dixy, Holiday Classic, O'Kei, Lenta, Sedmoi Kontinent, Viktoria and Monetka. (7 Jun)
