UK Retailers’ Easter Sales To Hit £747m, Study Shows

A new study has forecast that UK retailers’ Easter sales will hit £747 million this year.

The research was carried out by marketing agency Savvy as part of its Easter shopper panel research.

The report revealed that 80 per cent of those planning to celebrate Easter expected to purchase Easter eggs this year. Meanwhile, 46 per cent of shoppers said they did not mind spending more to make the Easter weekend more special.

Alastair Lockhart, insight director at Savvy Marketing, said: “A big part of Easter is about chocolate eggs and with 80 per cent of shoppers planning to purchase them this year, retailers are set to win or lose customers, based on their ranges and, crucially, prices."

Shoppers stand to be the real winners this year as we currently see some of the keenest pricing in years, as the leading players battle it out to boost their share of shoppers’ spend, he added.

He continues: “But with falling prices likely to squeeze margins, retailers will need to look elsewhere if they are to protect their Easter profits. For food retailers, ingredients for family roasts, drinks for friends and family, and party food present the best opportunities to inspire shoppers and give to them those extra reasons to spend that little bit extra."

In other Easter-related news, the over-50s have voted on the popular Cadbury’s Crème Egg, with 77 per cent saying they love the product. The survey was carried out by the Silver Surfers website.

Martin Lock of Silversurfers website said: It seems that the chocolate egg is still a firm favourite for the over 50s.”
