Russian Retailer Lenta Appoints New Chief Executive

Russian retailer Lenta has appointed Herman Tinga as its new chief executive, as the hypermarket operator seeks to turnaround a recent dip in like-for-like sales.

Tinga has served as chief commercial officer at the business since 2013, having previously held the role of non-food global category management and sourcing director at Metro AG over a 32 year career in retail and cash and carry.

He replaces Jan Dunning, who is leaving the company with immediate effect.

“We thank Jan for his many years of service,” commented Lenta chairman John Oliver.

“We have built a very strong team and processes throughout the business and are delighted to be able to promote Herman to the CEO role with immediate effect. Herman has played a central role not just in building Lenta’s world class commercial operations but also in the wider operational progress that the business has made over the last five years. Herman will make an exceptional leader for the business and we all look forward to working with him in his new role.”

State Of Operations

In October, Lenta revealed that it recorded a 0.6% decline in like-for-like sales in the third quarter of the year, with reported sales up 12.5% to just over RUB 100 billion.

Last month, the group announced the appointment of a new chief financial officer, Rud Pedersen, who is joining the retailer from Carlsberg next year.

On his appointment as chief executive, Herman Tinga said, “Lenta has built a strong position in what continues to be a challenging time for the Russian grocery retail market. We have a clear plan of actions to further develop the business.

“I am confident Lenta will continue to prosper and look forward to working with the Lenta team to deliver on our plans.”
