Carrefour Spain Introduces Natural Gas-Powered, Tri-Temperature Fleet

Carrefour Spain will be the first distributor in the country to use 'tri-temperature' trucks, powered by natural gas, in its fleet.

As part of its strategy to reduce CO2 emissions, the new trucks will be used to deliver online purchases, along with vans also fuelled by natural gas.

These vehicles will reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 99%, and the emission levels of previously-employed diesel engines by 95%, while also decreasing noise pollution.

In the interior of the truck, the company has installed a 'tri-temperature' system, with three independent chambers that hold frozen, chilled, and dry goods, each adapted to the appropriate temperature.

Using this system, the company can guarantee that each item travels at the correct temperature, and arrive at its destination in perfect condition, the company said.

Carrefour will continue increasing the number of these vehicles throughout Spain.

The online Carrefour platform has the largest offer of fresh produce in Spain, and same day delivery to guarantee freshness. It is the only retailer that can deliver online purchases to 95% of the Spanish population. It received 100 million visits, and 700,000 purchases in 2016.
