Hofer Private-Label Range Gets Environmental Approval

Austrian environmental organisation Global 2000 has given its approval to a new range of cosmetics offered by Austrian retailer Hofer, part of the Aldi Sued group, which have been declared hormone-free.

"The absence of hormone-like chemicals in these products presents the chain as responsible, and is an important step to avoid unnecessary health risks for consumers," said Helmut Burtscher, a Global 2000 spokesperson.

The announcement follows extensive tests by Global 2000 on the presence of hormones in cosmetic products, particularly those that are classified on the EU suspect list as endocrine-disrupting chemicals that could have a negative effect on human health.

As Burtscher explained, once said chemicals are absorbed through the skin, they can be present in breast milk "a few hours after application".

He added that he was hopeful "that other drugstores and retail chains, as well as Nivea, L'Oréal and Co." will follow Hofer's lead.
