Pladis Calls On Customers To Make Recycling Their New Year Pledge

McVitie’s maker Pladis UK & Ireland has called on customers in the UK to make recycling their primary new year's resolution, and urged them to recycle their Christmas biscuit wrappers.

The snacking giant has extended its partnership with TerraCycle to include wrappers of Jacob’s Cream Crackers, and Mini Cheddars for recycling.

Managing Plastic Waste

Customer vice-president at Pladis UK&I, Scott Snell, said, “During the festive period, we Brits consume 35 million more packs of biscuits than we do during the rest of the year, so it’s a really important time to start thinking about where all that waste goes.”

Pladis partnered with TerraCycle in 2012, and since then millions of biscuit and cake wrappers have been recycled and turned into items such as park benches, and garden equipment.

The CEO and founder of TerraCycle, Tom Szaky, said, “We encourage consumers to help spread the message to friends and family that they can recycle their biscuit, cracker and cake packaging.”

Consumers have the option to send their wrappers to TerraCycle by Freepost, or drop them off at one of around 500 collection points around the UK.

Other Initiatives

Pladis has also released a video showing how to turn old boxes of Jaffa Cakes into a mini-home wrapper recycling box.

The box is designed to provide a simple way to store plastic wrappers in a tidy way, before sending them to TerraCycle for recycling.

The company also announced a that it is now a signatory to the UK Plastics Pact, and has pledged to make all of its plastic packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.

Marcus Gover, CEO, WRAP, said, “Through our first-of-a-kind pact, we will work together with governments, citizens and business to transform the way we make, use and dispose of plastic so that we retain its value, particularly in reducing food and drink waste, but prevent it from polluting the environment.”

Pladis will also introduce improved labelling on products to provide clear instructions on how and where to recycle the packaging materials.
