Delhaize Emerges As Serbia's Top Retailer In 2018: Report

Delhaize Serbia has emerged on top of the Serbian retail market in terms of revenue and profit in 2018, according to a report published by local daily Tabloid.

Based on official company figures, the report reveals that the retailer ended the year with a turnover of RSD 100.5 billion (€850 million) and a net profit of €22.5 million, compared to €39.2 million in 2017.

Mercator-S, owned by Slovenian retailer Mercator, emerged in the second position, with a turnover of RSD 84 billion (€711 million) and a net loss of €14 million. 

The company operates three banners in Serbia - Idea supermarkets, Roda mega markets, and Mercator hypermarkets.

Germany’s Metro Cash & Carry generated a turnover of RSD 26.5 billion (€224 million), but ended the year with a net loss of €184,000, the report said.

Local hypermarket chain DIS posted a total turnover of RSD 20.7 billion (€175 million), up 10.6% year-on-year, with a net loss of RSD 39.6 million (€335.000).

Serbian supermarket chain Aman, owned by Jordanian-born Nedal Khalil, reported revenues of RSD 19.6 billion (€166 million), up 3.2% on the previous year. 

Its net profit amounted to RSD 420 million (€3.55 million), down from RSD 477 million in 2017.

Novi Sad-based Univerexport saw a turnover of RSD 18.8 billion (€159 million), up 11.2%, with a net profit of RSD 30 million (E255.000).

Lidl Srbija, which started operations in the fourth quarter of 2018, posted total sales of €97 million and a net loss of €46.6 million, mainly due to the opening of stores and purchase of real estate.

Local discounter Quattro Diskont posted sales of €59.2 million and a net profit of €1.1 million.

Greek retailer Veropoulos saw a 4.6% growth in annual sales to RSD 5.6 billion (€47.7 million), while net profit dropped from €350 million to €300 million in the period.

Montenegrin retailer Domaća trgovina, which operates in Montenegro and Serbia with supermarket chain Aroma Market, reported sales of €41.7 million and a net loss of €673.000 (€1.1 million in 2017).

The retail segment contributed to 19.32% of the Serbian economy in 2018. 

The total profit of the retail trade in Serbia reached RSD 81.8 billion (€692 million), representing an ROI of 11.89%.
