Fresh Beef Joins Aldi Süd's List Of Higher Animal Welfare Products

Aldi Süd has switched to fresh beef from farms that implement higher animal welfare standards, the company said in a statement.

The discounter offers fresh beef from farming method 3 from German agriculture and relies on German origins wherever possible for organic beef.

Dr Julia Adou, director of sustainability at Aldi Süd stated, “We are pleased that our customers are following the path to greater animal welfare with us and are increasingly choosing animal welfare products.

“Together with our partners along the entire supply chain, we were able to convert fresh beef to higher farming methods at an early stage. Now it is important that other actors follow suit because the path to greater animal welfare can only be achieved together.”

By 2030, Aldi Süd plans to convert its entire fresh meat range as well as chilled meat and sausage products to farming methods 3 and 4.

Currently, 50% of sales in the discounter's fresh meat range as well as over 20% of chilled meat and sausage products come from higher farming methods 3 and 4.

Aldi Süd already sources its entire drinking milk range from higher farming method 4 and relies exclusively on German origins.

Around nine in ten European consumers would support revised laws supporting farm animal welfare, a new study by BEUC – The European Consumer Organisation has found.

The survey, which was carried out in eight EU countries, underlines the need for the European Commission to 'heed consumers’ concerns and fulfil its commitment on animal welfare, by proposing new laws and updating existing ones', the BEUC said.
