Tesco Cuts Up To 1,700 Jobs In Bid To 'Simplify Operational Structure'

UK supermarket chain Tesco has said today that it is removing a number of roles from its stores, in order to 'simplify its operational structures to improve efficiency'.

The retailer is removing the role of People Manager, Compliance Manager and Customer Experience Manager, which is set to affect 1,700 staff members.

Tesco added that, as a result of these changes, 900 new roles with broader remits will be created at its stores and fulfilment centres.

"These changes remove complexity and will deliver a simpler, more helpful experience for colleagues and customers," said Matt Davies, CEO of Tesco UK and ROI.

"We recognise these are difficult changes to make but they are necessary to ensure our business remains competitive and set up for the future."

Davies added that the retailer hopes to retain "as many colleagues as possible" in the newly-created roles and in the company's current vacancies.

Job Cuts

A number of the UK's major supermarket chains have announced job losses in recent months, as retailers seek to cut costs amid growing competition.

Tesco already cut around 1,200 head-office jobs last June, one week after it closed one of its call centres in Wales, affecting a further 1,100 employees.

In October, Sainsbury's announced plans to cut up to 2,000 jobs as part of its plans to save £500 million, while in December, Asda entered into consultation with staff that could result in 842 senior shop-floor employees being dismissed or paid less.

Earlier this month, Tesco posted its eighth consecutive quarter of growth, with like-for-like sales up 2.3% in its home market.
